Death Investigations
It is our agency policy to hold evidence from natural or accidental death investigations for 5 years. Wondering what other agencies are doing and if anyone has a shorter time frame.

Our agency holds death investigations that do not have any legal concerns only as long as it takes for the medical examiner to close their report pending whatever testing they have requested. Once that is done the case detective will then mark what can be released to the NOK and mark the rest for destruction. If it is a suspicious death or one that is potentially going to have legal consequences we will hold until our legal or the case detective states otherwise. If there is a criminal component to the death investigation then we will hold it until the criminal case is resolved.
